Methylene Blue (MB) is a synthetic phenothiazine compound with a long history in medicine. Modern research has revealed its remarkable properties as a mitochondrial electron carrier, antioxidant, and neuroprotective agent. MB can accept electrons from NADH and donate them to cytochrome c in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, effectively bypassing Complex I and III dysfunction.
Methylene Blue acts as a redox cycling compound and alternative electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. At low doses, it enhances mitochondrial respiration by shuttling electrons between NADH and cytochrome c, increasing ATP production. It also inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO) and acetylcholinesterase, contributing to its neuroprotective and cognitive effects.

CLINICAL NOTES
Note: urine will turn blue/green. This is normal and harmless. Higher doses may cause paradoxical oxidative stress. Avoid with serotonergic medications.
