Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a 28-amino acid neuropeptide found throughout the nervous system, GI tract, and immune system. Research has explored VIP for its potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, its role in circadian rhythm regulation, neuroprotection, and its potential in treating conditions such as POTS, MCAS, and chronic inflammatory conditions.
VIP binds to VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors, increasing intracellular cAMP. This leads to smooth muscle relaxation (vasodilation), inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-12), promotion of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10), and modulation of T-cell and dendritic cell function.
Typical Dose
100 mcg once daily
Dose Range
50-200 mcg/day
Frequency
Once or twice daily
Route
Subcutaneous injection or intranasal
Cycle Length
4-12 weeks
CLINICAL NOTES
Intranasal delivery is preferred for CNS applications. Monitor blood pressure due to vasodilatory effects.
